Pepplantis

Pepplantis was the most technologically advanced city on Jankus Bocrankus, fueled by a mysterious beverage. Pepplantis became known across the land and shared their creations, but knowledge of these was eventually lost along with the city.

Before the Collapse, there was a major watering hole on Fuhrren Faang the Beasties called Teefy Sippins. (It was named this because “yoo sip da sippins froo ya teef.”) A group of novice majick users—later called the Swank Mages—accidentally conjured a being known as Slurpeh da Bawble, a giant, thirsty bubble who slurped up the entire body of water leaving behind nothing but a deep, dry depression. Eventually, when the Beasty and Munchy worlds finally met during the Collapse, a small pool of liquid appeared in the thirsty basin and hope finally returned to the region.

Frugs are curious amphibians. They are distinct from their relatives: the unremarkable fwogs and the comically dimwitted foogs. It was a frug who first investigated the caramel colored puddle at the bottom of the basin, who then pulled out a straw and sampled it.

The frugs that drank the mysterious cola developed an overbearing sense of preppiness. They traded their warts for shorts, their croaks for croquet, and ribbits for robots. It also elevated their intellect beyond that of other species in the region, allowing them to develop highly advanced technologies. They called the drink Pepp and these elevated frugs became known as Peppae.
NOTE
Peppae is plural and Peppe ( pepE ) is singular.
A City of Pepp
On the site where Pepp was first found, the Peppae constructed a drilling apparatus to tap into the seemingly endless supply of underground Pepp. Atop this Pepp rig was placed a giant metal drum, a reservoir they called the Pepp Jug. This sourced Pepp to the entirety of the city built around it: Pepplantis.

A small group of frugs wondered at the majickal abilities of the Ato and dreamed of emulating them. Too proud to ask for instruction, they let trial and error be their teacher. When Pepp brought them greater intellect, their power grew—but their mistakes only became more dangerous. They called themselves the Swank Mages because of the swanky capes they started wearing as Peppae.
Slurpeh da Bawble

One fateful day long before the Collapse, the majick-inclined frugs gathered on the shore of the Teefy Sippins watering hole and chanted. One of the few sound combinations they could croak was “BIG BUB,” which inadvertently conjured the thirstiest bubble: Slurpeh da Bawble. Slurpeh gently floated over to a broken reed and began sucking up all the water from Teefy Sippins until it was bone dry. Slurpeh da Bawble, quenched, floated up into the sky to drift in the wind for ages to come. The frugs kept secret the truth of where the Bawble actually came from.
NOTE
They documented their majickal learning in a grimoire called the Seekrit Swanky Timsbor ( sEkrit sCENkE timsbOr ) but forbade anyone but the most skilled (if you can call them that) from reading it because it contained the BIG BUB spell, their secret shame.
Exile
The high council of Pepplantis deliberated what to do about the Swank Mages. The city had become fed up with their disastrous practice, so the mages were banished to exile. They left the basin and traveled west along the north mountains, eventually finding a cave in which to reside. They called this hideout the Swank Grotto.
Swus
Many disparagingly referred to the Swank Mages as the Swus ( sws ) Mages (swus meaning incredibly awful).

Jeffy (he/him) ( jefE ) was one of the weakest among the Swank Mages, often made fun of for his large eyebrows. After a particularly trying day of insults, he sought solitude deeper in the grotto. It is here that he discovered an enormous glowing object emanating dark energy. It captivated Jeffy, enticing him with power. This was a crystal of pure Usu. When Jeffy touched it, his soul bound to the crystal and his body fell limp. A few of the other mages found him later and called for the others.
The leader of the Swank Mages, a Peppe named Pierre Le Swanky (he/him) ( pVr le sCENkE ) approached the crystal. As he touched it, its power surged through him and he fell to the ground. He could feel the energy surging up his arms and into his chest. Then up his neck and to his forehead. Suddenly, he sprouted the largest eyebrows any of them had ever seen. Pierre could feel the crystal had given him stronger majick, and so he decided his first spell would be to revive Jeffy. Pierre placed his hands upon Jeffy’s lifeless body and suddenly it began contorting. The others watched in horror as Jeffy transformed into a terrifying creature before their eyes. Pierre Le Swanky believed this was his doing. “Jeffy, once the weakest among us, has now become strong by my hand! He shall henceforth be known as my minion: Jeffrey Pepp! Come forth, my children, and embrace the Swank Stone! Receive the power that has always rightfully belonged to you!”

Jeffrey Pepp (right) next to a Swank Mage
Jeffrey Pepp (he/it) is the first dark god: a being who has given their soul to chaos and embraced the power of Usu. When he was known only as Jeffy, hatred grew inside of him with each insult he received. This made him a choice target of the Swank Stone’s chaotic influence. Pierre Le Swanky believed Jeffrey Pepp to be his created minion, but this was incorrect. In reality, the spirit of Jeffrey Pepp is what gave Pierre and the others their powers, afflicting them with greater eyebrows than him. His influence through the Stone’s powers allowed him to control the Swank Mages without their knowledge, using them as pawns to carry out his dark bidding.

The Swank Mages with their new enormous eyebrows emerged from the darkness of the Swank Grotto and built a stone building in the nearby Cotton Candy Forest, placing atop it their prized Swank Stone. This became their new home base, the place where they practiced their majick and plotted their plots. They called this place the Swank Temple.
